I haven't actually tried what I am about to suggest but it might work.
I was playing around with ImageMaster a few days ago and hit the 'make
shine' function on a buffer with large areas of solid colour.  The
resulting image was very interesting with almost fur like edges.  My
image had solid white splashes.  I'll try this out again and let you
know how it goes.
